In your spare time …

Hopefully we are keeping you busy enough across all the modules of your journalism MA but just in case here are a couple ways to fill those spare moments:

  • Read Mark Briggs’ “Journalism 2.0″ handbook for loads of great tips and techniques in your online journalism practice
  • Register at and take a new course with Poynter Online and the News University. Registration is free as are most of the flash-based courses on everything from editing to multimedia storytelling and reporting across platforms.

Doing Web Stuff On A Mac

Your Mac comes pre-bundled with web server software as part of its operating system. This software (called Apache) is the same exact software that powers about 70% of the world’s web servers. Having this on your own Mac means you can practice your web skills on a real web server – your computer – even if you don’t have an internet connection.

I’ve put together a one-pager on how to get started. You can download it here.

Any questions? Do feel free to leave a comment and I will respond.

Citizen journalism is back in and on the news instead of reporting it. Apple stock dropped nearly 10% in a hour on 3 October, 2008 following a false story published on CNN’s iReport by a site user that Steve Jobs was in hospital from a massive heart attack. » Read the rest of the entry..

Why You Have To Use Your Own Work In Assignments

I hope that all of you will now see how simple and un-code-like HTML really is. Once you get the hang of it, it’s not hard, and you can do some pretty cool stuff with it.

One issue that has come up a lot in the labs is that for ALL of the assignments, you MUST use your own writing.

Because there have been so many questions about this, I’d just like to explain it clearly one more time. » Read the rest of the entry..

Online Journalism Awards

The US-based Online News Association has announced the winners of the 2008 Online Journalism Awards. Despite the list limiting itself to mostly American mainstream media publications there is a lot of interesting content to browse for aspiring online journalists. One of my personal favourites is Bearing Witness from a team of 100 reporters and photographers from Reuters.

What is ‘content management’?

At least in one respect, the concept of ‘content management’ is easily unraveled: No prizes for guessing it must be the process or activity by which you ‘manage’ your ‘content’. Tongue in cheek as that may seem, as somebody who works with a content management system or CMS almost every day, I have sincerely come to think of it this way. This article will help you to understand what it means journalistically as well as semantically, whilst explaining why the simple, and playfully tautological definition of it above is the most useful one. » Read the rest of the entry..

Bloggers and journalists

Who says bloggers aren’t journalists? Democrat convention organisers in the US issued 120 media credentials specifically for bloggers at this year’s convention.  Another 500 authorised bloggers are reporting from the two-storey “Big Tent” set up outside the convention where $100 buys you a workspace, free wi-fi and all the beer you can drink.
